If you are looking for the most sweet and wonderful book to introduce a child to cats there is nothing better than “Duncan and Dolores” by Barbara Samuel.
Dolores is a boisterous, energetic little girl and she knows that she just wants Duncan.
She dotes on Duncan.
She wants to share every part of her life with him and energetically pursues him wanting to show her love.
The only problem is that Duncan really wants to be left alone.
Delores terrifies him.
And with that this delightful picture book sets the scene for the loving relationship between child and pet. Something that plays out daily in the homes of real children and their animals and author Barbara Samuels has created a wonderfully vivid picture of the relationship.
This classic picture book is a charming read for toddlers and early readers alike, or adults who love children’s books. Simple narrative, wonderful illustrations help to capture the story of a girl and her cat. Written in 1986 and a Reading Rainbow selection this is part of series of Dolores books that Samuels wrote and all worth reading, but especially the books with Duncan. If you want to introduce a child to cats this might just be an excellent choice.
