The Oxford Dictionary of English defines cat as: “a small domesticated carnivorous mammal with soft fur, a short snout, and retractile claws. It is widely kept as a pet or for catching mice, and many breeds have been developed”.

Yes, but really what is a cat?

Self-possessed.

Self-sufficient.

Fluffy

Independent.

What Is A Cat?

Aloof, yet demanding.

Furry.

Introvert and extrovert.

Inscrutable.

Cuddly.

Fun, playful.

Loving.

What Is A Cat?

All words to describe this creature that shares the lives of so many humans. But this still begs the question, what is a cat?

What is it about the cat that creates the relationship they have with their humans? So mis-understood. Loved and worshipped, sometimes feared. In history they were surrounded with superstition. Even today the sight of a black cat can instill fear into many. Yet the internet is ablaze with grumpy cats, furry cats, crazy kittens, and on and on. What is it about the cat that holds us in such awe and has such a grip over the lives of so many, that has them virtually overtaking the internet? This is a good question.

Cats adorn art work, are the subjects of poetry, appear in scores of books as both main and side characters. This symbol of a contented home and infuriating independence they have video channels, gifs, memes, coloring books. Decor and craft items galore. The cat has never been more popular. From mouser to mouse pad this small creature of wonder has won a place in our hearts and homes. All despite being independent, aloof, occasionally skittish. Largely untrainable.

So, why do we love them so much?

Maybe for all of the reasons listed.
