Pussy cat, pussy cat, where have you been?
I’ve been to London to look at the queen.
Pussy cat, pussycat, what did you there?
I frightened a little mouse under her chair.
First published in 1805 ( and no doubt in existence for much longer) this little nursery rhyme is believed to refer to Queen Elizabeth I of England.
There was a cat in the Queen’s court, apparently.
To keep the mice in check.
However, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who celebrates her Sapphire Jubilee February 6 2017, does not have a cat.
Known for her love of animals her menagerie includes Corgis, Labradors, horses and many others.
But no cats.
However, it is known that as a small princess she loved to draw cats and many examples of her fledgling art show this.
But all is not lost…..
Her Majesty did have a Siamese cat.
Corsham Royal Boy was a seal point Siamese that she received as a wedding present.
Many years ago.
Despite being surrounded by dogs and other animals there still might be some descendants lurking around the halls and rooms of Buckingham Palace.
As there are no doubt many mice!
Further investigation is needed.
