Welcome to Novempurr!!
In this magical month between the bewitching black catness of Halloween and the candy stripped frivolities of Decempurr is this thankful and sharing month.
Novempurr.
A truly global event with slightly different interpretations. In Australia Purina says they created it to raise awareness of cat’s health and wellbeing. In the United States it is an initiative of the ASPCA to is designated as a month to find your furrever friend to share the holidays with (remember, no furball sleeps alone) and with kitten nurseries bulging and shelters running low on supplies now is the time for thoughts of opening your heart (and hopefully your home) and sharing.
Depending on which part of the globe you live might impact how you partake in Novempurr, or you can be a truly global citizen and use both interpretations. For now, let’s focus on the US version. Finding homes for furry felines, and supporting those who rescue and care for them.
Kitten nurseries have been bulging after the summer and many ASPCA shelters report that they tiny kittens are now ready for homes.
And the older cats.
And the special needs cats.
And the cats who have been dumped and had their hearts broken.
The list goes on, and on.
So, once again the message is – if you have room in your life and heart for a cat or kitten, singular or plural, now is really a purrfect time. There is enough time before the holidays to get them home settled. A little training not to eat the turkey, climb the tree, open the presents, run past the menorah. Swallow tinsel.
You and they won’t be home alone for the holidays.
The ASPCA has many wonderful cats and kittens that you can find in your area (just put in your zip code and shelters within 25 miles will come up) who are looking for homes, and love, and companionship. In their words they have a
a seasonal takeover…of cute, lovable kittens!
If you can’t adopt a little love ball then other alternatives are – as always – to support your local shelter. At this point in the year shelter supplies are running low and many are desperate for donations of money and supplies. Some of the things they really need include:
- Unopened food – dry and wet
- Treats
- Clean towels
- Clean litter boxes
- Cat litter
- Bowls
- Scratching posts
- Bedding
So head over to google and search for your local shelter and share with the cat ladies who care for the cats who aren’t so fortunate.
For Cat-Opedia’s very wonderful readers from the UK (of which there are many!!) you have no need to feel left out. Cat’s Protection (a really great and wonderful source of information on all things feline!!) (and worth a visit for readers world wide) has a wonderful ‘find – a cat’ feature that allows you to put in your post code and they will show you many of the fabulous felines looking for homes. Of course you can also donate, but additionally you can sponsor a kitty so that you are caring for them – while just not doing the work!! You know that you would just love to have a little moggie with your for the hols!!
So….what are you waiting for? Make this an extra special Novempurr!
Important Words
Cat and animal ownership is a gift and responsibility. These creatures are not disposable and may live long lives, and have health issues.
Consider this before becoming a parent to one. They will share your life, steal your heart and that is the way it should be.
Animals should be for life.
Be a responsible owner.
